These children's programs are intended as beginning programs
for children ages 1-5 or 6. They have been "tested" on my own
child.
It should be kept in mind that computer "literacy" or
orientation is the first goal for small children. Familiarity
with the mouse, gentle treatment of the keyboard, relationship of
screen and keys or mouse, and inserting and removing disks are
learning skills that can take six or more months to learn. Just
clicking and pointing on a box or object on the screen is a major
and very important task for a small child, age 1-3.
Other programs I have seen focus on a large variety of objects or
pictures, or diversity in game formats. I have come to the
opposite conclusion. The computer presents a complete frontier in
itself and constancy and simplicity is the best approach. In
alphabet games the same images and letters are associated, and I
found this to remain interesting for ages 1-3. The child neither
knew the letters nor tired of the images. Rather the child found
new things in the images each time and even took a long time to
actually learn to recognize and learn the image.

TOP LEFT - ALPHGAME
A big success as children begin to relate to the concept of
letters. You can help a lot at first.
Click on the word that begins with the letter in the circle.
Children may not relate to the idea of words until they are 3
or 4. They may point only to the letter itself but anywhere on the
word will give a right answer.
Wrong answers get a low tone. Right answers a high tone and
the image matching the word appears onscreen.
TOP MIDDLE - ALPHFISH
Probably better for 3-5 year olds.
Each letter of the alphabet must be picked in order. Use the mouse only.
There's a song if you get to the end. You don't have to.
TOP LEFT - TRAIN
For very small children start with the moving train, truck,
and race. Just point to the box (train, truck, or race) and have
your child click the mouse. Make sure the sound is loud enough.
SECOND LEFT - MUSIC
For all small children. Good for learning to be gentle with
the keys. Pressing most keys makes random tones and prints the
character. Exit with right mouse button.
SECOND MIDDLE - DIFFERENT
Use the mouse to pick which image is different from the other
two. Very good for building computer skills. Remember that much
of what is being learned is how to use the computer. That is why
the programs are kept simple although entertaining.
When your child is very young, you should help out more, if
you will excuse the pedanticism.
SECOND RIGHT - ADDITION
Adding. Use the keypad numbers or the top row numbers to get
the answer. I think counting the images on the right is OK for
small children. Pointing the mouse arrow at the numbers and + and
= symbols and teaching the child to read these is very helpful in
teaching beginning reading.
You can ask your child to read across each time until the
concept is understood. I didn't force it.
THIRD LEFT - SUBTRACTION
The concept of zero. What a bang.
THIRD MIDDLE - WORDEASY
Not easy at all for pre-schoolers. Try helping a lot.
There is a lot of reinforcement built in.
The object is to click on the word that matches the picture.
Finally the word appears scrambled and each letter in
succession must be picked to spell the word. Can be very
frustrating, incomprehensible. A little at a time is a good idea.
BOTTOM LEFT - ANOTHER TRAIN
Just for watching until the instructions come up at the end.
The follow them to control the train.
BOTTOM MIDDLE - BUGGY HIGHWAY
Mostly for watching, but press 's' for snow, 'r' for rain,
'p' for police car.
With all these programs I found that at the beginning after a 15 minute
session (or less) my son was finished. As the computer experience
sunk in, my son would spend sometimes 45 minutes. Other times he
would spend less.
I also used Logo programs and DEGAS drawing. In LOGO, I used an
excellent book called Apple LOGO for teachers, especially the
program called JRLOGO which lets the child use one key to do
anything you program it to do. Like draw a truck or the child's
name.
Another good thing for children is to load a word processor
and just let them type. It is as good as any other game.
